The project.
We were commissioned at rather short notice by a film set construction company to install two different Adidas branded wallcoverings to bespoke temporary stud walls to be transported to a location for filming and photoshoots.
Installing custom branded digital wallcovering requires specialist skill and experience especially since not all wallpaper hangers or installers will install wide-width wallcoverings. This is why we were called in, having installed digital wallpaper for this client for the Gangs of London Season 2 film set previously.
Specification.
Due to the short notice, we had very little information to work with. But the film set construction company are experienced. So on arrival at the workshop, on Sunday morning, our expert wallpaper installer spent time with the Project Manager to go over the full specification and drawings.
The corridor section consists of six different shaped stud walls constructed of plywood of around 3.2m high and various widths. Some were constructed as a straight wall, chimney breast and triple aspect or zig-zag wall. The kitchen was constructed of two adjoining walls at around 120 degree angle.
There were numerous insurmountable challenges during this project. But with our experience in film set decorating we had pre-empted and defeated these challenges. For instance, unlike decorating conventional buildings where wallpaper is installed onto a solid structured wall, it is far from the case in film sets such as this project where the “walls” are not secure and will inevitably move during wallpaper installation.
In absence of any wallpaper design instructions from the digital printers, our wallpaper installer had to spend some time to understand the wallpaper design to ascertain if any allowances have been made for trim waste, pattern loss and other factors that may affect wallpaper installation, particularly custom digital wallpaper where there is no room for error.
Another challenge our professional wallpaper installer had foreseen was the plywood substrate that the custom branded digital wallpaper had to be installed on. Untreated plywood is not an ideal substrate for installing digital print wallpaper because of its highly absorbent properties so if adhesive is applied too sparingly, there will be very little adhesion and slippage to manoeuvre the wallpaper, resulting in join gaps, crinkles, edge peel and bubbles etc. In such situations, our wallpaper installer recommends cross-lining prior to installing the custom branded digital wallcovering but when film set decorating, time – and budget – is of essence.
The result.
Although we had very little information about the project beforehand, having worked with the film set construction company previously, and having experience in film set decorating, we were ready although we had not worked at the workshop before, just on location. With strong team work with other trades produced excellent results.
For the six corridor sections. the wallpaper design was a combination of browns, yellows and amber colours circulating around the rather subtle Adidas logo. This wallpaper was printed into individual drops of 3.2m long and around 1075mm wide. No overlap or splicing was required, just traditional butt join to match.
The 120-degree kitchen wall was installed with another but different custom wallpaper design featuring hexagon shapes of three different colours wrapped around the more prominent Adidas logo and surrounded by contrasting pointed arrows. This wallcovering was printed with absolute minimum wastage to top and bottom and just under 1080mm wide.
As soon as our wallpaper installer had completed the wallcovering install, the workshop guys proceeded to dismantle the stud walls carefully and load onto waiting lorry to transport to the film and photoshoot location. All on schedule for the film and photoshoot.
