The project.
As Balham painter decorator we were contracted by a London building company to carry out Balham painting and decorating in Balham to a newly fitted kitchen and adjoining reception, including new plaster throughout, skirting boards, door frames and pocket sliding door.
This project required high level of attention to detail with all surfaces being new, to ensure sharp crisp lines, especially for the dark accent ceiling paint, so Phantom Painters and Decorators were brought in – Balham Painter and Decorator.
Specification.
All kitchen ceilings were recently skim plastered so all plaster surfaces were mist-coated – a form of priming by applying thinned white matt emulsion to allow the plaster to absorb the very first coat of matt emulsion paint. Our Balham painter decorator applied two additional coats of Pure Brilliant White matt emulsion to the lower ceilings
Our Balham painter then applied Slaked Lime by Little Greene Paint Co in a matt emulsion finish while the woodwork were also painted in the same colour but with an acrylic eggshell smooth hard-wearing finish to give a little contrasting sheen from the matt walls.
We created an accent ceiling paint using Acqua Viva by the RIBA recommended Paint and Paper Library to give a rich, deep chalky finish. We applied this dark colour to the 3.5-metre high ceiling with utmost care to ensure a clean sharp finish to the edges, which formed part of the existing Victorian house, so were not entirely plumb.
Reception – in the living room our Balham painter decorated one wall to marry up with the existing decoration following new pocket sliding door installation and wall skim plaster. All paint colours were carefully colour matched and professionally applied by Balham painters and decorators.
The result.
On arrival, the site was busy with other trades, a practice our Balham painter do not particularly like but we were assured that they would complete that day, leaving us to do what we do best – Balham painting and decorating to high standards. Everything was essential new including woodwork which were factory primed.
This kitchen extension now oozes natural light from the large concertina doors and gable windows and from the side-to skylight over the kitchen worktops. The deep chalky Acqua Viva has the effect of averting a too clinical decoration without impacting natural light and ambience of this large family kitchen.
As Balham painters and decorators we may see more accent ceiling paint once the accent ceiling paint idea catches on, once many are a little tired of standard design or feature walls. It will take a brave client, like this one, to break the interior décor mould by introducing black ceilings. When the client told our Balham decorator they wanted the ceiling to be painted in what is a shade of black, we were rather stumped and lost for words. Our Balham painter decorator was concerned that the abundance of light coming through the newly installed concertina doors would be impaired by the dark ceiling. Admittedly, it works quite well on this kitchen ceiling, perhaps because the ceiling is much higher than your conventional 2.5m height and there are some characteristics of the whole kitchen that comes into play here. It is not to everyone’s taste and not all ceiling designs are suitable for accent ceiling paint.
We think that the accent ceiling paint could have been a little more interesting by making use of the geometrical shapes in the ceiling to create more contrast with the neighbouring Pure Brilliant White and Slaking Lime, and the dark triangular steel windows. For example, painting the small vertical gable wall facing the window in Slaking Lime, and perhaps just one slope of the gabled roof in Acqua Viva does cleverly break up the dark ceiling into different shapes and contrasting dark and light colours. We think this would have created a talking point amongst London interior designers and Balham painters and decorators.
